Soho Penthouse
maa designs acted as a design consultant to the architecture firm of James Sanders and Associates for the renovation of a large duplex penthouse apartment in SoHo. Completed in the spring of 2007, the 1750 square foot space -- commissioned by a New York couple with grown children -- occupies the top two floors of a newly constructed residential building and includes an expansive 1000sf terrace.
The architects maintained the existing loft-like feel of the space with an open floor plan on the first level that includes a gracious entry, an elegant kitchen, dining and living areas as well as a wood burning fireplace. Large, east facing windows along one long side of the space provide an abundance of natural light. A beautiful custom designed steel and wood staircase connects to a sitting room upstairs which opens on to the terrace with Empire State building views. Wonderfully landscaped with bamboo and grasses, the terrace is an oasis in Manhattan.
