maa designs.

In collaboration with New York architects <HOLT and D'Alessandro & Associates, maa designs designed the complete renovation of a 5,000 square foot former Harlem carriage house for the new headquarters of a brand identity firm relocating from Los Angeles.  Located on West 133rd Street in Harlem, the project also includes a three-story owner-occupied residence with a garden and patio, and two rental apartment units.  maa designs’ services included programming, schematic design, and a thorough design development package with outline specifications and schedules.  Construction of the project was completed in October 2003.  Graham Moss, one of the owners, played an important collaborative role in the design and execution of the project.

The existing 1899 masonry and wood building required extensive removals.  

maa designs took advantage of the necessary roof work and designed north facing skylights to allow a sun-lit office on the third floor as well as a skylight above the central stair.  Excavation of part of the existing cellar allowed for additional area.  The rear yard was also designed as a garden for the owners.
